The Crafty Musings of Heather and Sarah

Summer of Socks

June23

Dear Ida,

Things have been quite crazy around here lately with both personal family issues and lots of design work. As you know, the infamous Mae Finch was apprehended, and I am currently following some leads on several other crimes! Mae Finch happened to coincide with the start of summer and with it the start of Summer of Socks 2010.

Some people over on the Ravelry Summer of Socks group are setting personal goals for their socky summers. I posted that I really only wanted to work with as many different sock yarns as possible. But with designing socks, it has been my goal to explore every different type of sock construction that I can. In this spirit, CSI patterns will feature different heels and toes, different construction methods such as cuff down and toe up, and different techniques such as colorwork, lace, cables, etc. The collection is quickly becoming a complete workshop in sock knitting!

What are your goals for Summer of Socks 2010? What are your favorite construction, techniques, and features for socks?

Love,

Heather

I can’t wait! I’ve been told that I’m getting the CSI e-book for my birthday, if that person doesn’t deliver I’ll just buy it myself.

My goals for summer socks? I really want to swatch up, knit, and write the pattern for this one sock in my head, and submit it to be published (somewhere). Pipe dreams!

I have this amazing favorite sock feature. It’s a heel, but without the turning! When working a toe-up sock with a gusset, you just start decreasing the gusset stitches. It’s a very comfy heel!

Heather and Sarah welcome you to Crafty Detour. What is Crafty Detour?

It’s kind of like a podcast, but without audio. A place where Sairy Knits and Digitalnabi come together to provide a two part perspective where other blogs usually only provide one. It’s truly a detour from our usual blogging which we will continue to do on our own sites. CraftyDetour is a joint venture that will enable collaborative projects in the future.

Heather is the creative director for The Alpaca Yarn Company. She also designs knitwear, teaches, and blogs here: digitalnabi.com. She’s web programmer by day, a designer by night and a knitter always.

Sarah is a researcher/analyst for a stock indexing company – a job that keeps her on her toes! She has been knitting since starting graduate school for Applied Statistics in 2005.  Sarah knits, spins, and dyes yarn and roving for her etsy shop: Stitches ‘n Rows. Her personal blog is Sairy Knits where she tries to blog about finished objects, test knitting, her fat cat Haley, food, and whatever else is on her mind when she can remember.
